Journey to the World of Portuguese Fado with Ramana Vieira

Music aficionados will be immersed in the rapturous rhythms, and the passionate stirrings of fado, the folk music of Portugal! Fado which translates to fate or destiny dates back to the early 19th century. Traditionally, fados are dramatic ballads expressing love, loss, and redemption.

Ramana Vieira captivates her audience with old world classics infused with instrumentation, creative layers, and soaring vocals. The New York Times has recognized Vieira as an American at the forefront of the Fado resurgence. Fado in the 20th-century was popularized by Legendary fadista Amália Rodrigues, but today it has witnessed a revival, with platinum-selling Portuguese singers selling out concert halls throughout the US.

Ramana Vieira will be presenting her spin on traditional Portuguese fado. Viera is a Portuguese-American, conservatory-trained artist who surprises the audience with her superlative renditions of American classics, and jazzy blues. Her captivating ballads range from romantic, passionate, humorous, and haunting. For this lovely concert, she is joined by extraordinary musicians: Carlos Reyes on violin; Jeff Furtado on guitar; David Parker on bass and Earl Jackson on drums.

Carlos Reyes, recording artist, producer, engineer, harpist, and violinist– has been breaking musical barriers since his first public performance at the age of five. Born in Paraguay South America, he began his musical education at the age of three on the violin. He made his debut on the Paraguayan harp with the Oakland Symphony and his debut on the violin with the Oakland Youth Symphony at the age of fourteen. Known as a prodigy for his work recording for commercials, solo artists, and instrumental music for well-known children’s shows such as “Sesame Street” and “Villa Alegre”
