Time: 1:30PM - 4:30PM

Artechnē is a foundational course ‘how to make’ artist materials of various natural color mediums for painting and drawing, including their relationships with tools, binders and surfaces. The course will teach you how to extract color from mineral and botanical based materials gained by the foundations of learning: experimentation and observational studies from sensory knowledge and time.

From this course:

-Build a creative relationship with various color materials to make paints, watercolor, pastels, and more.

-Discern what makes good paint (natural vs. synthetic) and how you can push the medium creatively.

-Can help creatives to explore a new language with materials.

-This process will evoke creativity, curiosity, connecting to nature, cultural heritage, and thrifty thinking.

The beauty of this foundational course is open to all ages and levels of experience as it will open a gateway of knowledge one can venture further into other mediums, materiality, sourcing and meaningful practices in your artwork and everyday lives.

*Materials and tools will be offered. Optional: participants can bring flower petals to experiment with.

About the instructor: Eva-Maria is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar investigating art and design through the modes of craft, alchemy and the natural world. She utilize her expertise of early modern artisan and craft material technology as a methodology and means of experimentation. An alumni of the Royal College of Art/Victoria and Albert Museum, postgrad Design History program, her unique dissertation is the first in the program to apply practice-based research by experimenting with an 18th century English artisan cobalt glass recipe. Her education extends in Art History from the University of California, Santa Cruz, trained at the Florence Academy of Art in Sweden and worked as an art conservation assistant in Italy and California with paintings and paper artworks.
