April Session: Acrylic Paint – Learn to Create Your Own Colors

Ages 16 and up

Mixed-media artist, Catherine Cruz, will teach you the basics of color mixing with acrylic paint by using only the three primary colors and white.

Class 1: Understand primary, secondary and tertiary colors, how to use a color wheel, how to mix acrylic paint.

Class 2: Practice color mixing and create one or several color palettes using a “mother color”. You will be able to create unlimited colors using this technique and you will paint on paper to create multiple color samples (warm colors, cool colors, neutrals).

Class 3: Create a simple abstract painting by mixing your own set of colors.

Required materials:

Acrylic paint (Liquitex or Golden) – one tube of each color: cadmium yellow medium (or primary yellow), cadmium red medium (or primary red), cyan blue or cobalt blue (or primary blue), titanium white. It can be either heavy body or fluid acrylics.

Palette paper pad

Nylon paint brushes, preferably flat ones, at least a dozen

Empty plastic container 32 oz for water

Small canvas 11”x14” or 12”x16”

Materials provided by instructor: paint mixing knives, additional brushes, and lots of paper

About the instructor: Catherine Cruz is a French-American artist, whose work is informed by textures and patterns created by the passing of time and the effects of the natural elements on the built environment. She has taught collage and mixed media workshops in the Bay Area and France since 2019, and this is her third year at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Her background is in interior design and green building certification. She works from her home studio in Sebastopol, and is a participant in Art Trails Open Studios.
