Oil and Cold Wax Techniques
Sat & Sun, October 21-22, 2023
10am - 4pm (1/2 hr break)
$350
Cold wax medium has become very popular because of it’s ability to extend and add body to oil paint, it’s ability to speed up drying time, increase transparency and workability. It also doesn’t require any special set up or ventilation, and allows you to build up very exciting textural effects and layers.
This course is for beginners through intermediate students (though advanced students are welcome too). I am used to running multi-level workshops that serve everyone’s needs and goals.
Specifically this workshop will cover:
CWM/Oil how to’s: proportions, solvents, mediums, surfaces to use, Tools and how to use them effectively: Brayers, silicone tools, brushes, palette knives
Techniques covered: Foundational layers for optimal results, Techniques and decision making through the rest of your layers: Texture imprints, Using RF pigment sticks, Dry pigment and how to use it safely, Adding collage, Dry mark making and mark making in general, Glazing and veils of color, Composition guidelines to help you when you get stuck, Color theory and color mixing to take some of the guess work out of what to choose next
What you’ll come away with:
Confidence in how to best work with the medium, An understanding of the process of working in CWM/Oil from start to finish, A stronger understanding of composition and color, An ability to avoid common pitfalls like muddy color, overly opaque surfaces, How to reference a photo and how to work with no source image
Andrea’s Workshop Philosophy
Even though working intuitively is a blast, it comes with it’s challenges. My aim is to help you keep your intuition alive and well, while also giving you the tools and technique to be able to step back from what you’re creating and make informed decisions.
Beyond the pure technical aspects of CWM/oil, having a few composition tools up your sleeve will give you the ability to answer the questions I hear so often from students: Where do I go from here? Something is off with this painting, but what is it? Is this painting finished? What color should I choose for the next layer?
Think how great it will feel to have so much confidence in your own process that you can stand back at any moment and know what your painting needs and why.
I help you see when it’s time to PLAY and when and how to stand back to move forward. The combination of intuition, play and, technical understanding and analysis is what helps you build up consistent skill.

Color Mixing and Ten Strokes: March 7, 2023
Tuesday, March 7, 2023
10am-2pm
Takes place in the Painting/Drawing studio at SebArts
In this class, the instructor will paint with oils in just three colors and white as a demonstration of color mixing techniques and making different values of the colors.
There will be a discussion about the color wheel, intensity of color and warm and cool colors followed by your own guided practice on painting an object such as a piece of fruit or vegetable with “ten strokes.”
We would continue to do as many pieces as time would permit.
About the Instructor:
Susan Bradford has been painting for fourteen years mostly as an oil painter but has also painted extensively with acrylics and encaustic. She has studied under four great artists, Aline Ordman, Carol Watanabe, Suzanne Edminster and Susan Stover. She’s also attended three Plein Air Conventions and have plein air painted in many European countries. Susan belongs to a local art group AWS and has started a small plein air group within that organization. We meet every Friday and paint around Sonoma County.

Painting/Drawing Studio at Sebarts
In Part 1 of this two part workshop series participants will adhere their natural forms to multiple painting supports and create a nature filled textural composition.
In Part 2 of this two part workshop series participants will seal, prime and paint the textured surface they created in the previous workshop. Students will receive guidance on how to highlight the patterns and forms.
Using the earth and its elements as the foundation of artistic inspiration, texture and form you can tap into my vast collections of leaves, soils, lichens and more and learn some of Amanda Hopkins’ trade secrets.
These techniques of adhering natural materials, layering them, priming, painting and sealing them are very unique. We will be using various textures of soil, different types of leaves and dried flowers as well as lichens to create eco inspired compositions that draw on the glorious perfection of natural forms and the sensuous textures that can be found in nature.
Amanda Rose Hopkins received her B.F.A from UC Santa Cruz with a concentration in painting and environmental art. Locally she has creatively taught children at Sunridge and REACH Charter schools. She spent 5 months studying under artist Kaveri Singh and Thangka painters from Nepal and Sikkim at the Sarnath International Nyingma Institute in India. Her work is currently focused on highlighting the sensuous texture and environmental importance of the kelp forests. You can view her work at https://artofnature.me/

This is the follow-up to Catherine’s Abstract Collage Workshop. You will need the collage you created in this previous class or any other collage you’ve made, preferably on a sturdy and durable surface like wood. If you don’t have a collage, she will provide one for you.
You will learn mixed media techniques to add to your collage design such as shapes and colors with paint and oil pastels, layering and editing, creating translucent layered effects, glazing, scrapping, and adding textures and patterns. This workshop is appropriate for artists working with collage, journaling, altered books, and mixed media painting. It is part of her abstract collage series but it can also be taken on its own. The goal is to provide a non-judgmental and supportive setting where participants can challenge themselves to respond intuitively to art, unleash their creativity, and ask a lot of questions.
We will discuss materials and techniques however you might not end up with a finished piece as the focus is more on experimentation. Be prepared to play, get messy, and unleash your creativity!
Please note: this is NOT a collage making class.
